Hello, I'm begining a renovation project and am looking for ideas. I was wondering if some kind of hammered metal would be an appropriate countertop in an A&C kitchen. Any suggestions would be appreciated....thanks

not sure how period appropriate metal counters would be.

im sure brushed stainless or aluminum would be nice. copper may have been used for drainboard or backsplash for an original copper sink, so i would assume it would be in character.

i would like a continuous counter, drainboard, sink combination with no seams, or smooth soldered seams at least. no open joints.

Thanks Don,
I was thinking either copper or zinc, because of the oxidation and aging abilities but I wasn't sure what would be period appropriate. On another note, I really liked the clock face that you posted a few weeks ago. Very nice! Thanks for the info.

another aspect to consider, is reaction of the metal to other substances, like bleach, ammonia, vinegar, etc. and in what might transfer from metal to food. copper should be ok, but not sure about zinc.

thanks for the comment on the clock. i have posted design drawings for some clock cases as well in the interiors forum.

Don is correct that you need to consider reaction to food stuff. Stainless is the most inert of metal surfaces. The color is not as appealing as copper. It is nearly impossible to maintain a patina on the bare copper if you use cleaners/vinegar/lemon juice....etc...

You might consider using a tile with copper color glaze.

Thanks for the info....I think I'm leaning away from the metal idea. This is my first bungalow type home that I'll be renovating, so I'm trying to be period correct.....This site has been a very valuable find to help me. Thanks to all for participating!!
