Greetings and thanks for the welcome to the forum. I normally stick to clay but saw this and was struck by the shape and detailed work. 3lbs in weight, 8.5" tall, 3.75" base, 5" opening. No markings. Looks like a slag bottom. Nice patina. Any help or direction in which to search would be helpful. I live in Toronto Canada. I know sometimes location can give clues. Mac

Mac,
Interesting copper vase. Is there a seam that is visible on the side? If not it is probable that copper tubing was used to make this vase or that it was raised from a large disk of copper. I do not what you mean by slag being used for the bottom. Is slag glass inset into the bottom? Without a signature it is next to impossible to know who or even when it was made. The hammering is done with a cross pein hammer to creat the texture on the surface. I supect it is rather heavy. Is it watertight? Fred Fred (Moderator) http://fredz49.blogspot.com/ |

Hi Fred, Thanks for your reply. Fred there is no seam on this piece. As for the slag term, the base is not copper looks like it was waste metal of some sort (see pic). No signature...I know it drives me crazy...happens with pottery all the time...lol. Do you think it might be Trench Art? I also thought it might be Vetcraft after reading an earlier post but again no mark. The detail is quite amazing. Thanks Fred. Mac

Mac,
The base looks like a flooded lead solder job. I am not certain of it's age. The flared contour was popular during the first part of the 20th century and I suspect this vase was made by taking a section of copper pipe and flaring the ends. The texture is part of the process of making it. Fred Fred (Moderator) http://fredz49.blogspot.com/ |

Thanks again Fred. If I get anything more definitive, which is unlikely, I will post it here. Regardless it fits in nicely with the style of my home. Thanks. Mac
