Another eBay riddle for someone to solve. Is there anything recognizable about this piece?

Now, I am going to go out on a limb.

It looks European. Rosewood. The copper has a sealer on it because it doesn't look like is has oxidated for a hundred years.

I would use as a trash can for paper in my office.

It would blend well my A & C furniture but I doubt that is American A & C. It just feels too decorative and the flower is too flowing and soft. I would expect something more linear, stylized and angular.

I don't think it's worth tons of money at all, I think it's just a homemade piece but what it's copying is worth a decent chunk, mmm about 1500 I think....

Ok, I spend time last night flipping through an on-line catalogue on Roycroft metalware--a collection of all of their published ads selling copper item. Then, I went through my books. Nothing.

It's American. Can you give me a hint on date?I

Yes it's a Roycroft cylinder vase pattern. I think it's a fair bet someone was copying one. Very similar to Don's pic (stolen from roycroftcopper.com - is this what you checked Bev??? ...lots of cylinder vase examples on this site).

No, I came across a site where a prof was publishing everything he had about Roycroft including magazines that published their ads. He claims to be a fanatic about anything Roycroft and it is a wonderful site. It includes a nice history of Dard Hunter and Kipp.

The copperwork was a bit crude from what I could tell from the photo's. I could not identify it from what I had. I never would have pegged it as a Roycroft. There good work is usually so elegant.

the piece is not roycroft, but i think the person who made it looked at some roycroft stuff along the lines of the one i posted.

I did recognize the motif as taken from a Roycoft cylinder vase. The work on the container is crude compared to the Roycroft examples I have seen.

Reproductions of these cylinder vases are being made by several craftsmen today.

The first website is a wonderful site by a friend. He does not reproduce Roycroft copper and has done a great job of informing all on the marks, styles, craftmen and fakes that are out there. The website owner has chosen to post current auction prices for the items he has shown.
