I visted a big antiques show on the weekend hoping to hunt for some good metalware but alas I did not see much of interest, except for this little piece that I picked up. About 8in tall, copper base over cast iron with the number 802 stamped on the bottom (a little rusty though, so hard to tell), and soid copper post and copper spring clip. I see this as a desk or table top holder for a business card, a table reservation sign or menu holder, or something like that. If anyone has different thoughts, and/or a vintage date, please post.

I don't recognize the maker, style, or utility. I agree with you that it probably has to do with a desk item. Perhaps a single memo holder or maybe it was custom made for a hotel or restaurant as a menu holder.
