I appologize if this is off topic but I coudn't think of another arts and crafts society forum where I could post this question as it does, soft of, relate to metalware.

My wife and I have been admiring knife and fork sets that were made during the late 1800's and early 1900's at antique shows. I've seen some references that the were made earlier but I've been told by other people that those are exagerations.

The sets seem to be great examples of the arts and crafts movement with simple wooden handles inlayed with pewter.

I've attached a jpg showing a set of knives.

Now for my question: We have seen many sets of knives and forks. However, none of these sets ever includes spoons. All the antique dealers we have talked have also told us they have never seen matching spoons. What was it about this time in history that people wouldn't have made spoons as part of a cutlery set?

Thanks for the help

Jay

I too have seen many knives and forks with the pewter inlay and like the others have never seen spoons.

It does seem strange.

That is a nice looking set.

Best,
