Im Not sure if this is a cndlestick holder or what. I'm not sure if it is copper or brass either. Someone told me that copper cant be cast like this but I'm leaning toward copper. What I found unique about this item are the holes around the base, as if it were to be nailed into somthing. There is also a mark on the side which may be a makers mark. Any help is appreciated

Grant

Hi Grant and welcome to the forum,

So glad you were able to repost this. I suspect your piece is not a candlestick and instead a piece from a ship or some mechanical device. It appears to be a bit small to be a candlestick. Have you tried inserting a candle into the opening? The mark is not of any known Arts & Movement craftsman and perhaps the mark of the part manufacturer. I suspect it is cast bronze and then lathe turned to specific dimensions. Thanks for sharing this piece and perhaps some else out there will recognise it.

Best,
Fred

A candle about the diameter of a dime could fit. It could have been turned on a lathe, there appears to be faint lines on the side and bottom.
This was found on the banks of the Missouri River in St. Charles Mo. There is a long history of riverboats coming through here along with many that are still here, on the bottom.

Does anyone have any suggestions on cleaning it. To get to this point I've used a Dremmel with a soft metal brush and Brasso.

Thanks

Grant

Grant,

The piece looks great as it is. If you wanted to make a candlestick out of it you could mount it to a well finished wood base using the screw holes.

Best,
Fred
