Fred, you are probably right about the polishing. attached is a pic from the benedict studio website of a hammered brass version.

It was definately a wonderful bargain and a great opportunity to own an item by an important group of craftsmen. I am currently working on a sequence presentation for the Benedict Website on the processes used to make one of their trays. Of course I can not be certain to the exact sequence.
