"Fake Verdigris" is it paint? Paint can be safely removed with a paint solvent and then the knocker can be polished. If a chemical patina has been applied then you may need to dip it in warmed vinegar for a short period and then perhaps use a mild abrasive powder such as fine pumice. Can you post an image?
