There are a great many unsigned and unattributable pieces of Arts & Crafts Movement metalwork out there and yours is one of those. The frame has great texture made with a cross pein hammer and the applied brass monogram was well done. Can you show us the back as well.

Fred,
I don't own this piece; it's been in an antique shop for quite a few months. I don't have a picture of the back. Also, the monogram is silver, although it looks like brass in the picture.

Thanks for letting me know what that style of hammering is called. It is really well done.

The price is higher than I'd like to pay, but I'm getting weaker every time I see it. It would be a much easier decision if I knew someone with those initials!

Frank,

It is a nicely made frame front. The initials are well done and they do give the frame history (even if it is not your own).

Work like this was common in junior high and high schools during the first part of the 20th century. It was not uncommon for a boy to make several items during his school year. Industrial arts were taught at a relatively young age and it gave the student manual and mental skill developement that we lack in many of today's schools.

Some frames are poorly finished on the back and you should examine it for flaws and to see if it is easy to exchange the image for personal use.

Hope this helps,

Fred

Thanks Fred. I did look at the back once, but I forgot what it is like. I'll check it tomorrow. I do remember that the photo can be easily replaced. I believe the price was $98.

I thought it was probably done by a professional craftsman based on the quality and the silver monogram. Thanks again.
