...first weekend restoration complete as of this morning..dilute selenious acid bath for several hours with buffing breaks to even the colour a bit, followed by a little heating and cooling a couple times, a little more buffing here and there, and a little dark wax...

The ashtray came out looking pretty nice !! The reason I went with OMS on the ashtray is that they did make the same form tray, and have two that are signed with the conjoined OMS, but the second tray has a slight variation to the pod design that is more of an oval that can be seen on there ashbowls /W matchholder. All-in-All if you find anything is a good weekend in my book.

Another dealer at the show had a large Benedict bowl with the same repousse (spelling?) bumps, and it had brass feet which B'dict is also known for I believe, but the price was a little steep - maybe I can haggle if he brings it to the repeat show in the fall. I saw a couple other over-priced Vetcraft pieces, one piece of Heintz, and virtually nothing else of interest in metal, with over 300 dealers. On the other hand, lots of good furniture this time but lots of steep prices as well.

What did they have on the bowl? To me it sounds like a Ferner if it has the brass feet and worth picking up even if its not signed. what were the dementions?

That was a nice find on the Vetcraft Humidor as you don't see many pieces on the market except if its a Canadian show where you find more in that area.

Yes probably a fern dish, sort of like this one on the benedict site:

It was 250, signed, maybe 10 inches across, but fully cleaned - worth it?

I would not wait to grab that one even if it was cleaned, WELL WORTH IT !! If you can find the dealers spot and name, I would give them a call ASAP....

To be honest I've looked at the bowl a couple times as the dealer hasn't sold it and he keeps bringing it back to the same show (happens twice a year). The Benedict stuff seems fairly lightweight based on the gauge of the metal and this was probably my hesitation combined with the fact that restoring a bigger piece is a little more risky and I'm no expert with metal. On the other hand if I can talk it down a bit next time, assuming he has it, and practice a bit more on junkers maybe I'll snatch it up. Unfortunately the dealer is just a random guy to me, so fingers crossed he makes it to the fall show with the piece.

Hi Stonecat,

Yes we did get off the thread a bit, glad you were able to move it.

If you do happen to buy it, I would have it repatinated by an expert, as Benedict patina's are almost impossible to duplicate to original even by the experts. Mike Adams is about the best in that field in my opinion, but I'm not sure that he's still doing patina's anymore and just concentrating on new works. Good luck SC

Thats neat to see the same model and after reading David Rudd's article on the company relationship, it makes sense. It looks like the rivet work is a bit better - in mine the rivets are just split punched (correct term ??) on the underside and one of them is about to cause the cup piece to fall off so I'll have to try to fix it.
