I have aquired one of the common "Nordkapp midnight sun" representations in enamel on sterling. It is clearly marked on the back "Norge 1926" and "925S". Norge means Norway of course and the date is clear, both in script style engraved writing.

Directly above the center of "925S", and below the "ge" in "Norge" is what appears to be Holmsen's opposed and overlapping jeweler's pliers mark - only vertically poised as opposed to horizontally. Quite faint, but discernable.

Does anyone have any information on Holmsen's work prior to 1932 or seen any of his work bearing the vertically poised mark? I have written to a number of vendors and collectors online, none of whom seem to have any information on Holmsen's work prior to 1932.

Dear Rolf,

Welcome to the forum.

You have picked a difficult topic and I have never read about the Midnight sun series. I assume that you have done some research with your computer's search engine. It's easy to research the Arts and Crafts movement in the USA and England/Scotland because of all of the information on the web and in books. There isn't a lot available for the rest of Eurpope unless your are fluent in those foreign languages.

I have been trying to find out about a couple of Northern German shop marks and there is very little out there. And I dont' read German very well. So, my research is at a standstill.

If you post a pictures of the piece, forum members can tell you by the style of the art if it is A & C. If doesn't fall into that category, then maybe some one can point you in the right direction. This fourm focuses only on the A & C movement (1900-1930) and your date is towards the end of the period.

Please post a picture of your shop mark, date, etc. Even if the piece is not A & C, some casual reader might recognize the mark.

Good luck.

Bev.
