I recently purchased a wall lamp which I thought was brass but now find that it is pewter. Since the lamp was such a good deal, I was wondering whether or not I could spray this with a brass spray paint, or what would be the best way to go about same. I eagerly await your response(s). Thank you. Michie

Is your pewter lamp base Arts & Crafts Movement style? If so we would love to see it.
As far as how to patch the exposed pewter... You may want to check with some of the local paint stores and see what it available in a metalic paint. You may have to do some experimenting to match what you have or repaint the entire base. The original brass finish was probably electroplated and that is not something you can easily do on your own. Good luck. Fred Fred (Moderator) http://fredz49.blogspot.com/ |

Thanks for your response, Fred. Unfortunately, no, the pewter lamp base is not Arts & Crafts Movement style. I will take your advice and see what is available at my local paint store. I am glad to know that it is something that can easily be done on my own. Thanks again for the reply. Michie

Be careful about using spray paint on metal. It runs very easy because you are spraying slick metal. Once you get a run in the paint finish, it is difficult to fix.
Even as an artist, I would hesitate about using a spray can on metal because I know I can mess it up. If you can get access to an air brush, it will be easier. It gives artists more control and you can mix your own colors. Places like Home Depot and Lowes and Shermin Williams now sell metalic paint. Take your lamp in and try to match the existing patina of your pewter. There are many different shades of pewter, silver, etc. If you find an employee who knows color, they can help you match the paint. Also, it is not that much to get the lamp refinished if you really think it is wonderful. Places like Rejuvenation Hardware will restore it for you and do a great job. http://www.rejuvenation.com/index.html?ipb=GA1001 Bev. |

Thanks, Bev. I am going to look into having the lamp refinished through Rejuvenation Hardware. Thanks for that bit of information. Michie
