Hi,
I'd be interested in connecting with other owners/renovators of the Sears modern home #168 (Matoka). I'm curious to see/hear about other "versions" of our house because our original builder strayed from the finishings as pictured in Sears' catalogue somewhat, (using local fieldstone etc). Also wonder if others have had any luck finding replacement window hardware. thanks, Susan K |

Gordon Van Tine offered a version of the Sears Matoka that was an IDENTICAL TWIN. From the street, there's no way to differentiate betwen the two.
Are you sure it's a Sears and not a GVT? Rose author, The Houses That Sears Built |

I just found a Matoka today in Cincinnati sitting right across the street from an Alhambra! I had found the Alhambra sometime ago and stopped by to visit it today and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the Matoka!

Here's a picture of the GVT/MW version of the Sears Matoka. It appears to be the same *drawing* as appears in the Sears Modern Homes catalog. So, how do you differentiate these two clones? The room sizes are all the same; the footprint is the same, the houses really are identical. I'd say look for marks on the lumber or check the millwork for shipping labels, indicating the house came from Gordon Van Tine or MontWard or Sears.
Dale, your thoughts? Didn't GVT and Sears have a distant connection in the early days? Rose author, The Houses That Sears Built |

Sorry. I didn't have the Sears catalog ad in front of me when I last replied. It looks like both pictures (MW & Sears) feature the double stained glass window -- or at least, two windows -- on either side of the chimney. Sears specifies stained glass. I don't see that in the MW add. Both picutres include a front, right basement window although our house doesn't have one. However, only the Sears ad describes the built in buffet with mirror in the dining room (which we do have).

There are two ways to pull in an image. One is using the little image icon in the toolbar when you're editing your text - that's good if you have images already posted somewhere and can just enter a URL to refer to them.
Alternatively, to upload from your hard drive, click on the icon on the far right of the toolbar - it looks like a paperclip. You can browse for your image and select the one you want. I believe you are limited to one attachment per post, so if you have multiple images, you'll need one post per image. Using the first method you can post multiple images by using the 'Display image' button for each new picture. Above instructions copied from another thread courtesy, Carol Kamm and Stonecat.
