Hello folks:
I recently purchased a hipped roof home built in 1913 in Germantown, NY, next door to the most charming little old (90 years) lady. Last year she told me that when she was a little girl, her mother told her that the house next door came by train. I researched the house by buying a book called “Houses by Mail, a Guide to Houses from Sears, Roebuck”, and sure enough there is my house. The style is called the Flossmoor. I’ve tried searching for this style house on the web, but can’t find it. Can you lead me somewhere that I may find more information on it? |

John,
The Arts and Crafts Society has a 1916 Sears Modern Homes catalog and I'm sure we can post a scan of your houseplan here in the next couple of days. It is a nice example of a Clipped-Gable house, very similar to a Foursquare. The Flossmoor was sold between 1912 and 1922. Also known as Model 264P180, C180, 3032, and 180 depending on the year. Details: Seven rooms and one bath. The triple window on the second floor is very distinctive. Congratulations on the new house. Lauren |

John --
Here's the image of the Flossmoor, aka Modern Home No. 264P180 as it is shown in the 1916 Sears catalog. It's essentially a Foursquare plan, but distinctive for the clipped (hip-on-gable) style roof instead of the common pyramidal style. The floor plan is kind of cool too with what appears to be a shared staircase between the kitchen and reception hall. Four bedrooms and a bath upstairs. Nice. Is the woodwork intact? We'd love to see more pics if you want to share ... we live for pictures. Best, Rikki |

Hi folks, thanks for the information. That certainly looks like my house and floor plan. Yes, there is a door at the top of the first floor landing that leads three steps down into the kitchen. All of the interior wood is intact and has never been painted. Interestingly, the bathroom is where the 4th bedroom would be and the space where the bath should have been is a large storage closet. I think I'll reconfigure that space back into the bathroom at some point and convert it back into a four bedroom. Here are more pics.

Well, that's my door hardware too and I have a GVT. I think I have the same front door, but can't see the detail in your shot.
You have nice woodwork too! |

Drool, drool.
Man oh man, that's a sweet looking house. What a find! I've only seen two Flossmoors in all my travels. Nice, nice house. Congrats! Rose author, The Houses That Sears Built |
