Does anyone have any information on how to identify a Bennett house?

KeithF,

I've got a couple of Bennett catalogs. One from the 1920s: Bennett Better - Built and one from about 1940. Both have pages that show interior fittings and describe the materials supplied by them.

When was the house built? If I know that, I can put up the appropriate images.

I don't even know if my house would qualify to be a kit house. I live 10 miles from the Bennett plant, so I was just hoping. I believe the house was built in 1914. Also, it is a 2 family. I don't know if those were even produced as kit homes. Thanks for your help.

Please feel free to email me any information as well. kc_f2001@yahoo.com

This is the only two family home in the 1920 Bennett Homes Catalog. Is the floor plan similar? It may look different inside but the footprint would not have been changed. This plan doesn't specify any fireplaces either.

The floor plan is very different. I just recently found a piece of trim that has a pencil marking of "city Lumber" which I researched was about 2 miles from the house. So I don't believe my house is a kit house. Thank you for helping anyway!

Even if it isn't a kit, you may still find the plan.

Kits are cool ... no doubt about it, but I don't really think they are any cooler than other old houses. There are plenty of nice old houses with excellent design, materials, and craftsmanship that aren't kits.

Good luck researching your home.

Here is a floor plan of my house (not professional of course). If anyone comes across a plan similar to a kit house, (2 family), please let me know.
Thanks

Rikki's right, mine is from a book of house plans. The company, Gordon Van-Tine sold kit homes, but they sold plans and materials too.

Your home may very well have been a plan house from GVT, Sears or any of the house plan catalogs and the materials been bought locally.
