I own a 1924 "bungalow-ish" one story with a full basement in Cincinnati Ohio (in College Hill to be exact). Anyway, during the final walk-thru before purchase, the previous owner mentioned that it was a Sears home.....how do I verify this? I've scanned thru Houses By Mail and see at least four floor plans that look really similar to mine but with small differences (The Clyde, The Oakdale, The Ferndale and The Osborn). I've been visiting the County Recorder's office but nothing of real substance has come up (just deeds & mortgages). Can anyone help me identify my house as a Sears or Aladdin or Montgomery Ward? If not, can you point me in the right direction? Thanks, jb

Sears had their millwork plant in Norwood from 1910 to 1940 so there are lots of Sears Homes in the Cinccinnati area. The millwork plant also housed the Sears architectural staff that provided design services for home builders who wanted to make changes. There are a few Sears experts that check this forum once in while, they'll be able to help you determine if the house is from Sears.

The floor plan has me REALLY scratching my head. Sometimes the fireplace is on the wrong side of the house, other times the dining room is where the bedroom should be. However, there is one very distinguishing characteristic about all of the likely Sears Styles I mentioned in my original post....that being the HALLWAY.
It's the weirdest thing: almost a perfect rectangle with very few walls. What I mean is its mostly made up of doorways. I concentrated on this architectural feature when I scanned thru the Homes By Mail book. I have a .pdf file of a "make-shift" floorplan that I did myself (so the measurements may be off) but Im not able to attach it to this post. If any of the sears experts would like to view it, just let me know and I can email it to you. Signed, anxiously awaiting |

Sorry, but it doesn't appear to be a kit home from Sears.
