Hi ~

Can anyone tell me what year the Gordon Van Tine Company went out of business? Is there an article or reference in a book? You can email me directly at pbellina@optonline.net. Thanks for your help!!!

Kit House

Excerpt:
"Gordon-Van Tine issued its first house plan book in 1912, and introduced its "Ready-Cut" home line in 1916. Mortgages were offered on a limited basis from 1927 to 1931. Gordon-Van Tine continued selling homes through 1945. When the post World War II FHA price limits turned out to be less than the cost of production, Gordon-Van Tine and a number of other companies refused to sell lumber and building materials. In 1946, businessman Sidney Rose of Cincinnati bought the company, closed it and sold off the assets."

Gordon-Van Tine closed in 1947, not 1946. A local lumber company purchased the rights to the GVT name and used it to secure sales into 1949.

A Gordan-Van Tine website will be up by the end of September. It will have a history of the company and examples of houses from Davenport and the Midwest. When it goes online i will post a notice.

Exellent Wolicki.

Do you have a collection of catalogs that you will be putting up on the site?

Have you gotten some interior shots?

I am looking forward to seeing your research.

Mr Wolicki and others, I live in a Gordon Van Tine house in Missouri and would love to share pictures with you. I looked for your book and couldn't find it on amazon.com, is it out yet?

Hello Friends,
The times of the various houses were the very same style we were building as I was serving my apprenticeship under my grand father in the family trade which was woodworking and looking at those books sure did bring back some memories.

The last house/home we constructed from the Van Tine company was actually in the early fifties right here in London, Ohio and if I can remember where it is located I will take some pictures and post them in this forum for your enjoyment.

I truly liked the books of that time and find it hard to believe they are still on the market for sale.

I guess that is why I like these forums in the manner I do. It is so wonderful to finally realize that I actually was part of history as we built those fine homes.

Respectfully,

Ralph Jones
