The ACS recently acquired a copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales, illustrated by Louis Rhead (1857-1926).

Louis and all his siblings attended their father’s art classes and worked in the potteries as children. His brothers Frederick Alfred Rhead and George W. Rhead Jr. were also artistic, and Louis, later in his career, sometimes collaborated with them, for example in book illustration projects. Louis was also the uncle of the potters Charlotte Rhead and Frederick Hurten Rhead.
Known as a poster artist in the 1890's, he turned to book illustration after the decline in the popularity of poster art.

I have created a slide show of high resolution scans of the art in Grimm's. I hope that you like it.

here are some pictures from an exhibit on the Rheads at the Zanesville Art Center that i visited summer of '07. while mainly focused on the pottery, there were several examples of illustration included...

yes, between columbus and wheeling WV. it was home to Zanesville pottery, Roseville, Weller and a number of other potteries of the period.

it was also home to Zane Grey the author. the town was named after his grandfather.

the museum had many great examples in their permanent collection as well, so worth going even without the Rhead exhibit.
