I am just getting into Art & Crafts style furniture and would like to get a few good books on it's early history. I have tried searching online but there seem to be so many of them. Any recommendation?

A trip to your local library will give you a list of books covering the history of the Movement. Start with some of the smaller ones and see what sort of information you are most interested in. There are reprints of the original Stickley catologues and some info on Roycroft and Rolfs information stored in many of the books on the Movement.

I believe there is a book that specializes in identifying the construction techniques used by several of the manufacturers. I am sorry that I do not know the name of that book.

A trip to your local bookstore may also reveal books of interest.

I am familiar with two books in particular that are well illustrated and show ways of identifying period furniture.

"Furniture of the American Arts and Crafts Movement" Furniture of the American Arts and Crafts Movement" by David M Cathers and "Mission Furniture: From the American Arts and Crafts Movement" by Paul Royka. Both are well written by authorities in the field of appreciating and collecting furniture of the Movement.

Thanks for the info. Smile

Unfortunately, my local library is closed down for an entire year, CA budget reform I'm guessing. Will try the two books you mentioned. Thanks again.

Hello I eat tofo,
If you are interested you may read the history of the Arts and Crafts Movement I wrote on Defining the Movement, starting on 12-31-04. To get there you will need to click on page 3 on the right side of the title of the Forum. Then you can read each post by working from that date to the end of the history I compiled.

Also here is a link that you might find interesting; http:www.jost.net/tec3012/projects/jellis/

Hope you enjoy my writings as well as the link that I just gave you.

Respectfully,

Ralph Jones
