I'm looking for a supply source that might have metal support arms for lampshades. This would be along the lines of what you might typically see on square prairie style lamps with large stained glass pyramid lampshades, or metal lamps with mica lampshades, etc.
So it is more of a simple metal rod usually curved, which hammered/flattened on the end attached to the base usually with screws. The other end that reaches out and away is sometimes slightly bent or flattened on the outside tip to conform to the edge of the shade when holding it up. Each metal arm is separate though, unlike a regular lampshade support spider which are soldered together usually onto a center ring. If anybody knows what I'm talking about and of a source that supplies them already made that would be great. I figured I'd ask before investigating trying to fabricate them myself or find someone who can. I've been unable to find anything other than the standard spiders which won't work for the wood frame with slag glass shade I'm working with (too small and thin for the weight and size of my shade). Sometimes you typically see the shade support arms on square prairie lamps made of wood (especially if the base is also wood), however the wood base I have is too small for wood arms in my opinion, which is why I'd like to find some metal ones instead. |

Try to post some pictures. I need something similar. Here's a metal spider on a metal lamp and the pic below is a marriage of a small base and a small shade I need to make/find arms for. So does something in a metal spider exist (similar to the top pic)or should I go wood? The base has no evidence that there were ever wood arms attached.

Yes, I'll try to get some photos of mine (camera is at the office currently).
Interestingly, while yours looks different from mine, size wise they are the same problem/situation. My base is also a delicate thin neck, with no past evidence of past wooden support arms, which is one reason why I think metal rod would work and look better. However lamp part supplies only have the weak metal spiders you normally find on the top of typical fabric shades. I'm not afraid to try to fabricate my own or find a metal worker who could, but finding pre-made ones in stock somewhere would just be easier and quicker (and probably cheaper). Hopefully someone knows of a supply source or some exisiting solution. |
