Recently picked up some mica sheets from Merritt's and I am finding it hard to mould the sheets. The sheets from Axim Mica were easily moldable and I had no issues.
I assume the use of a heat gun is all that is required to mould this into a shape. Any direction given to me is greatly appreciated. |

A heat gun should work. I have used the stuff from Merritte's before and had no issues. The thicker stuff is harder to shape; you have to have the gun on high. Other than that, it helps to have a form to mold it with. I have used a stainless steel mixing bowl in the past to get a rounded shape. You can pretty much use anything that won't catch fire or melt. Also, the binder that is used in the mica sheets is another factor: the silver / almond mica uses a synthetic binder that seems a little harder to form. It smells like chemicals when you heat it vs. the less pungent smell from the amber mica. Also, you need to have very heavy gloves to hold the mica in place while it cools; I usually blow on it to speed up the process. There are so many other neat things you can do with mica: staining, aging, etc. It's also pretty forgiving; if you mess up, you can always re-heat it--unlike glass, which is messed up so easy if you don't cut it right the first time.
