I have a wooden filing cabinet that I'd like to lacquer in that oriental style that has like a blackish color underneath a red color. Can someone suggest a kit for doing that? I already tried Home Depot and I've been researching the web and haven't been lucky at all... If someone knows an easy technique for doing it, I would really appreciate it... Thanks!

Hi Mconill The style that you are trying to achieve can be done. However you should be good with conventional spray gun. The process is with lacquer and lacquer dye/stain. Start with a solid dark umber (near black) lacquer. Then with shading lacquer (some Cordova or red dye in the lacquer) then an even mist over the entire piece. This should take a few coats. Finish up with a full "wet coat". Sean
historically accurate japan finishing is multiple layers of shellac. If your starting surface has open pores and is rough then you will need to apply several coats of gesso. Gesso can be purchased or if you have the equipment of a glue pot, then you can make the product. For the japan finishing that my firm has completed we used dry pigment red and black and mixed them into dewaxed blonde shellac. We applied 15 coats of black and 15 coats of red and rubbed through with steel wool. For a final coat we applied neutral wax. Obviously this is a complicated schedule. Good luck.
