Would anyone know where I could purchase an Arts and Crafts style poster to be framed? It must be large since it will be going over my fireplace. Thanks

Dear Derek,

Why not haunt some of your local antique or junk stores? Any old print by Maxfield Parish would look great. Check out your local consignment shops. They often resell posters for a fraction of their original cost.

As far a reproductions go, look at the paintings of the English Pre-Raphaelites such as Burn-Jones and Rossetti known for their haunting paintings of women in medieval garb. Aubrey Beardsley was a genius at black white poster/illustrations. Gustave Klimt was an Art Novueau artist who's use of gold leaf contrasts nicely with the dark woods of most mission houses.

Consider an old map or a lithograph. Check out your local galleries. There are many artists now working in painting styles that blend or are compatiable with a bungalow house or mission furniture.

Also, for what it would cost to frame a modern reproduction print ($175 to $500) try to find an old mission mirror. Morris's rugs/tapestries are being reproduced as wall hangings. His tree of life would be a nice vertical accent above your fireplace.

Good luck with your search. Type the names of these artists into your search engine and you will find sources for reproductions of their paintings and art work.

Very nice site, Stonecat.

Here is some information about this kind of printing. This type is called giclee--that means that the ink is sprayed on the paper with a high quality ink printer. (Big Bucks) A computer uses a digital image of the orginal artwork--no paper prints or 35 mm slides anymore.

The norm for limited editions is usually around 300. At 500, most artists think of these not as limited editions but on the realm of posters. This is open to a lot of fierce debate amoung artists, collectors and galleries. The neat thing about giclees is that editon #1 is the same quality as edition #300 because there is no woodblock or metal plate to wear down. And the artist only has to print one at time, as they are ordered. Therefore, we don't have to print all 300, pay for them, store them and hope that they sell.

And for giclee print of that size, $175 is on the cheap side.

One of my favorites is "Flaming June" done by Frederick Leighton. You have to like orange - but it is gorgeous!
