Hi All,
I'm a longtime lurker and first-time poster. I've always been impressed by the many knowledgeable and talented people who regularly participate in this forum, and am very happy to learn that it will be able to continue in its current form under the new ownership. At any rate, I'm curious to know if anyone here knows of any arts and crafts-style bedside alarm clocks or clock-radios that are available by mail-order of from some specialty web site. What is curious is that furniture sellers sometimes feature such clocks in their display photos, but I have never seen such a clock offered for sale. And a couple of furniture makers I wrote to disavowed any knowledge. Of course, there are any number of "retro" style alarm clocks available which can be easily found via a Google search, but I've never seen one that was specifically built in an identifiably Craftsman style. It always struck me as a bit odd, considering the great number of A&C mantle clocks that one can easily find on eBay and any number of web sites. Thanks very much for any input or suggestions. Bill |

Hello Bill,
Let me be the first to welcome you to the forums and I hope you find a lot of it to your liking. To my knowledge there was not any alarm clocks during the A&C period except for the rooster who would crow at the crack of dawn. Almost every family have chickens then and a good rooster was the best darned alarm clock ever made. Do come back and look around and thanks for becoming a member so you could also join in on the fun of days and architecture from the period. Respectfully, Ralph Jones http://hometown.aol.com/ralj7/index.htm |

Bill, Alarm clock did exist during the period though I am not aware of any Arts & Crafts Manufacturers who used the clockworks for an alarm. Seth Thomas would have been a possible manufacturer. Hopefully we can find further information in the future.

Ralph and Fred, thanks much for your input. Perhaps the humble alarm clock was considered such a utilitarian device that none of the A&C manufacturers ever considered the stylistic possibilities. In any case, I'm not necessarily interested in historical authenticity so much as in finding out what, if anything, is available in the current marketplace. Thanks again for responding to my note.
