This E-bay site is selling a lot of Weller in the Burntwood clay style. I have seen Burntwood pots in local antique shops going for a lot more. It's my favoriate Weller style becaue it is so unique in Arts and Crafts pottery.

Unfortuately, the black often pops off the vase and there are plenty of hair line cracks that can be seen inside the pot. This seems to be the nature of the style. The designs show a lot of imagination. They are fun and amazing to study. I think that they are just cool.

You have about a day to bid before the auction ends. I didn't realize that this seller had so much Weller to offer. Note, I am not bidding on this lot because I bought something else. I will post it when I receive it.

I have never seen that pattern before. Thanks for posting this....I think... I already have too many collections as it is and this pattern of Weller is awfully tempting!

I came across a vase that had two mice running along the bottom of the vase. It's is very funny but not in my budget this month.

This Weller is to tempting and so affordable. I may start collecting it--sure can't afford any Roycroft vases.

Here is the E-Bay page.

The vase is tiny--only two inches high and three inches wides. But it is a hoot. I could just see this piece as part of a collection--the little tiny vase that gets all of the attention.

Bev.

PS. I have just discovered that old E-bay pages disappear. So I am posting pictures from this webpage for future reference. Here is the first one:

In this view, some one holds the little pot and you get a good idea of scale

I bid on the mouse pot. I must have lost my mind. It puts a smile on my face even if it takes money out of my pocket.

Bev.

That little pot went for $79. Wow. The bidding went crazy the last five minutes and now somebody else will be paying for it.

This shows the top of the pot and the inside glaze.

Bev,

I often find items that tickle my fancy and I have sometime regretted not getting them. I have saved the image of the mice and may do them in copper some day.

If you like the mouse theme, check out work by Robert "Mouseman" Thompson, an English A&C furniture maker who carved a mouse into most of his work

I am adding some more Weller burntwood to this thread. This little piece stands about 5 1'2 inches high and seems to be in great shape.

One of these sold on March 12, 2007 on E-Bay for $155--perfect condition. Another sold for $90 on E-Bay as recently as April 28, 2007. I found reference to a sale price of $275 on a website called, "Go Antiques" but there was no date. I only found three of these spider vases in my web research.

I have bid but have been smashed by the competition. The vase is now almost $50. Bidding ends later today. But, I did contact the seller about the clay color. According to my new Weller book, there are fake Wellers on the market today. One way to tell is that the clay color is wrong. The old stuff was made from clay dug around Zanesville Ohio and it has a characteristically yellow color. The fake stuff being produced today is white.

The seller, very nice and prompt with her reply, said that the clay color was beige not yellow or white. When I compare that vase to others, the clay seems a lot brighter and cleaner.

One of these days, I will own a Weller spider vase but I am not sure if this is the one I should buy. They are just kind of neat looking in my book. I really can't tell if this vase is a reproduction or the real thing. One thing that concerns me is that the spider vases seemed to seldom come up for sale. Now, there has been one spider vase for sale in March, April and May.

Knowledge is power. When in doubt don't buy on eBay. Buy from a good dealer and get a written authentication and money back guarantee, and be prepared to pay a reasonable price.

The Weller spider vase had a final bid of $108.05 and did not meet the reserve. So, it did not sell.(May 17, 2007)

The last E-Bay auction was $90 and the one before that was $90. I wonder what her reserve price was for the Weller.
