Anyone know anything about the Overbeck sisters' art pottery? I'd never heard of them, but the July issue of Antiques, The Magazine has a great article on them, and their botanical vases are incredible. I was very impressed with their work. Anyone else heard of them? A Google search was not very helpful...

website for the Overbeck museum, but not much info:

http://www.overbeckmuseum.com/

There is a bit of a write-up about the sisters in the book Women in the Arts and Crafts Movement 1870-1914, by Anthea Callen. A Google search of Overbeck or Overbeck pottery 'Images' will give you a few pictures of their work.

-opened in 1911 by 4 of the sisters
-workshop in the basement, studio on the main floor, and kiln in a seperate building behind the house
- also did designs for Keramic Studios
- Margaret died year of opening, had studied at Cincinatti Art Academy and Columbia U
- Elizabeth Gray studied at NY State School of Clayworking and Ceramics and Alfred U, made a fellow of the American Ceramic Society
- Mary Francis also studied at Columbia U
- most acclaimed for Elizabeths work using glaze inlay and carving
- business went in to decline late 30s and closed in 1955

there is currently a comprehensive exhibit on the overbeck sisters at the indianapolis museum of art. the overbecks lived and worked near indy, a very appropriate place.

this is concurrent with the victoria and albert arts and crafts exhibit which opened sunday and runs through january.

i think the overbeck runs through november.

Hi Laura,

I hear the Arts and Crafts Exhibit and overbeck display at the Indy art museum is simply amazing.. I believe it is on display until mid January... The story on the sisters is really very interesting.. I know a little on their history (living here in Indiana (Terre Haute)) .. My advise, If you do make the trip to Indiana to visit the display, Don't miss the tour of the West Baden Hotel (one of the very few hotels with a Rookwood fireplace)...
