Newcomb Pottery

The Louisiana State Museum has an online exhibit of the Newcomb Pottery.

For those of us that may wonder where and who the women were that shaped the movement, we can find some gratification here.

"In the United States, as women sought to better their education and employment opportunities, the suffrage movement became inseparably intertwined with the Arts and Crafts movement. Women had a profound influence on the spread of Morris ideals. That both the Rhode Island School of Design and the Cincinnati School of Design were founded by women is hardly coincidental."

Examine some of the wares from the pottery up close. The article has some nice large images with plenty of detail.

My favorite: The Sadie Irvine vase with Narcissus, 1913

They also remind us that the College turned out Metal ware and Embroidery. They also made fine hand-crafted books.

I saw and got to hold some beautiful Newcomb pieces this summer, on a visit to Chicago. It really is stunningly beautiful pottery.
