Hi to everybody, I just discovered this forum and I am very happy about it. I am curious about a small vase that I have and can't seem to read the marks. It is rather small ( 5 inches tall) but I like it very much and would like to know more about it. So thank you in advance to you connnaiseurs for any info you can share with me.
Hope the pix won't be too large, if so, sorry and tel me how to do it properly. Pianist |

Hello Pianist,
First welcome the our Arts and Crafts Forums and we hope this is not your only trip. Now as for the picture our use of picture uploading on the server we are using is full and won't allow pictures to be posted. However, here is all you have to do, sign up with either Photo Bucket or Flickr as I now have and it then will allow you to upload pictures. I am not sure what photo bucket link is but, here is the one to Flickr. www.flickr.com and you will find them both free. Good luck and we hope to see again. Respectfully, Ralph Jones http://hometown.aol.com/ralj7/index.htm |

Hello Pianist,
I see that you were able to get through but unfortunately the numbers of 1/9 as I saw with these blurry eyes does not help from my stand point of view. However there are some folks on here who are more fluent on pottery than I, so maybe one of them will be able to help you. Respectfully, Ralph Jones http://hometown.aol.com/ralj7/index.htm |

Hello Mr Jones, thank you again. You are right about the blurry picture of the bottom of the vase but I can't read it either while looking at it. The numbers are 172, that I can see clearly, but there seems to be a signature engraved but it is very soft . Anyways, thank you very much for looking at it and I hope somebody else will be able to give me more infos.
Have a nice day Pianist |

What a wonderful vase. It has a Fulper look to the glaze and shape. Can you get us a clearer image of the bottom. Perhaps if you can get the light to create a shadow in the recesses of the base where the glaze has run into the signature we might be able to read it. Try taking an images at a slant.
I love this vase and would treasure it even if we cannot find the maker. I have a gut feeling that I might know the signature. Let me do some research and get back to you. Fred (Moderator) http://fredz49.blogspot.com/ |

Thank you very much FZweig for looking at the vase. I will try to take a better picture the way you said but the signature is really hard to see. As soon as I can I will try to post the new pic.
Thank you again and have a nice evening . Pianist |

Good Morning Pianist,
The best method of finding information in pottery is to use a soft lead pencil and mark over the indentations and then wipe off the excess residue and he letters , numbers and any information will stand out like a sore thumb. Then after you have found out what it states you simply wash the article off and remove the lead/graphite from the crevices. Respectfully, Ralph Jones http://hometown.aol.com/ralj7/index.htm |

Hi again everyone and thank you for the good advice. By using your suggestion with the lead pencil, I was able to guess a name, although not very clear, Denbac, but it was enough to search and find a site with a matching vase with the same number (172) and so to identify the makers, French potters Dennert and Balichon and to date the piece aproximatly . So I owe it to your good advice that I was able to know more about my cute little vase.
So thank you very much again to both of you for your time and expertise. Regards Pianist |
