Hi doyle244,
Welcome to the forum. The description you give of the rought clay bottom would indicate that the body of the vase is stoneware. I suspect it is a relatively new vase. Post 1960's. An image of the bottom and mark might help us to give you a more accurate impression of your vase. It is very nice and rather large. Fits well with your A/C desk and home. The body or form has the look of NC. pottery, but I'm pretty sure it's not NC "North Carolina".. It looks more modern than arts and crafts. It was hand thrown as you know. The roughness on the bottom comes from the turner using a wire or string to remove the piece from the wheel. Try googling the mark with the words studio potter? I'd like to see a better shot of the mark.. You can do this by focusing about and inch to the right or left of the mark and the flash should throw a shadow on the mark which will make it easier too see..
