I received this vase in '00 as a gift for house sitting in Long Beach, MS. The vase is from Shearwater Pottery in Ocean Springs, MS.

I was told at the time that it was from the mid '80s and roughly valued at $75. Now this was pre-Katrina and just a guess by the person who gave it to me.

I'm curious if anyone could point me in the right direction to determine the actual value and perhaps a little history.

Thanks!

Sorry - This isn't an Arts and Crafts era item. My apologies.

Thanks!

Actually,

The history behind your vase is steeped in the Arts & Crafts Movement. Your vase is wonderful. Give me a bit more time and I can get you further information.

Hello Fred,

Thanks your help. I'm really curious to find a date. From what I can find it looks like similar style vases from Shearwater have year marks starting in the early 90s.

Thanks again!

We have two books in the bookstore that would help in your research on the Shearwater Pottery.

Dreaming in Clay on the Coast of Mississippi By Christopher Maurer, Maria Estrella Iglesias, 2000
"An intimate family memoir about the power of love in the face of adversity: the passionate pursuit of art-and the brave art of living simply-by four generations of a fiercely independent Southern family."

Shearwater Pottery By Dod Stewart, Marjorie Anderson Ashley, 2005
"Dod Stewart, the author, dedicated several years writing and photographing this book. Marjorie Anderson Ashley, is one of the daughters of Peter Anderson, who founded Shearwater Pottery in 1928. Special sections by Mary Anderson Pickard, Walter Inglis Andersons daughter, about her father and her son Christopher Stebly. History of the Anderson family: genealogy, early contacts with Newcomb College Pottery, George Ohr, & other facts. Sections dedicated to decorators: Mere Anderson, sons Walter Inglis Anderson and James McConnell (Mac) Anderson, brothers of founder Peter Anderson."

The vase is beautiful. I found an online exhibition of the pottery here: The Walter Anderson Museum

Thanks for sharing it with us.
