After doing quite a bit of research, it appears to be German c. 1900. There's no signature but it resembles, quite remarkably, the work of Richard Riemerschmid, famous architect, painter, and designer. He was involved in an art movement in Germany/Austria called 'Weiner Werkstatte'where the flowing forms of Art Nouveau tranformed into more geometric 'modern' designs. He's quite famous and in many museums. Now I have to try to get the piece attributed to him......or to see if there were other potters creating such quality works.
By the way, this is a lidded butterdish, holding 1 lb. of butter!
