HELP Does anyone know what this is? Would someone like to take a guess at what this is? I have no idea and I have looked and looked.

Okay, I'll guess.

Its a thing that you empty ashtrays into. It has the top so that the ashes don't pouff all over while you are walking around the table or party.
It looks like this metal one on eBay.

Lauren is correct. Your piece is called a Silent Butler which by definition is a small receptacle with a handle and hinged cover, used for collecting ashes and crumbs.

There is a paper lable on the bottom of your silent butler. Could you tell us what it says? This might give us a clue. I suspect it is relatively new and not of the Arts & Crafts Movement period.

A Google search for "porcelain silent buttler" will bring up a few listing. One that is very similar to yours lists for under $20. Another site lists one for a bit over $100. Hope this helps.
