HELP Does anyone know what this is? Would someone like to take a guess at what this is? I have no idea and I have looked and looked.

Okay, I'll guess.
Its a thing that you empty ashtrays into. It has the top so that the ashes don't pouff all over while you are walking around the table or party. It looks like this metal one on eBay. Lauren |

finally some in put! You know the handle has a hole all the way through to the pot i was thinking some kind insense burner?? I havent a clue really thanks for your guess

Lauren is correct. Your piece is called a Silent Butler which by definition is a small receptacle with a handle and hinged cover, used for collecting ashes and crumbs.

Thank you I have found alot of info on the item, now that I know what it is called It is a Silent Butler just not sure where it came from THANKS ALOT!!!! Eileen

Eileen,
There is a paper lable on the bottom of your silent butler. Could you tell us what it says? This might give us a clue. I suspect it is relatively new and not of the Arts & Crafts Movement period. A Google search for "porcelain silent buttler" will bring up a few listing. One that is very similar to yours lists for under $20. Another site lists one for a bit over $100. Hope this helps. The sticker says TAJ TAJ IMPORTING CO. i HAVE THIS BUTLER IN OTHER HOME IN fLORIDA SO i CAN,T PHYSICALLY LOOK AT IT ,NOT SURE WHAT IT SAYS UNDER ICAN READ JAPAN. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR INFORMATION EILEEN
