Hello all,
Can anyone here ID the maker of the right hand vase? Un-marked, super high gloss black finish that continues across the bottom with three stilt marks, 8 in. high x 3 3/4 diameter. The guide books available to me showed this glaze being used by Bauer but I could not find the vase form in their catalog. It came out of the same estate sale cabinet as the 1919 Rookwood piece but I have no idea if they are related, time-wise. Thanks for any help, C. ![]() |

The shape used in your black vase is similar to other shaped used in the Arts & Crafts Movement. The glaze is a bit stark and not subtle. Sometimes it is helpful to see the bottom of the vase to see the color of the clay used in the vase. Unfortunately your vase is glazed on the bottom.
I can not attribute it to a manufacturer. Good luck. Fred (Moderator) http://fredz49.blogspot.com/ |

Hello Fred,
Thanks for the quick reply. Attached is a photo of the bottom. One stilt mark shows white while the deepest one shows rust/red color. Was this shiny black glaze used by many factories? I've never come across it before, other than the Bauer items. Thanks again, C. ![]() |

Van Briggle made a series of totally black pottery in the 1960's. They were usually marked Anna Van Briggle. Since they are late for A & C, I have never researched them.
Good luck. It does have the shape of a Roseville 8' Mostique vase but with the glaze, I just don't know. Bev. |

Thanks Bev. I'll start with the Roseville books and see where it leads.

A wild guess on my part would be Haeger. Glaze and bottom seem to point in that direction.
