Greetings! I just purchased this wonderful painting from an estate (the others which I did not get all had Salamagundi Club labels on them). It is a 1900's - 1920's period painting which was framed on Flatbush Ave. in Brooklyn. It is initialed "HD" as shown and that is all I know. It is a very striking image and I'm hoping someone may identify the style and the artist. Thanks for the help!

Greetings Yourself,
Welcome to the Arts and Crafts Society Forums.
We hope to see you more in the future, now as for the picture it does not look familiar to me but, thats not to say that it's not to be one as it could or couldn't be of the A&C style.

It will take someone with more knowledge in this field.

Respectfully,

Ralph Jones

EJINPA,

What a wonderful painting. It is deIt appears to be a watercolor or gouache rather than an oil painting. It would have been great to have acquired the other painting since most of what was produced by the artists of the Salmagundi Art Club was of high quality and in great demand. Was this acquired in New York? I suspect you are going to have to find a list of the artist members and see how many fit the initials H.D. After that a visit to a local University library will allow you to compare signature by searching in a book of Artist Signatures, Monograms, & Markings.

I will see if I can come up with anything. If you are in New York you might want to check with some of the museums and see if they have a list of the artists of the Club.

I found a listing for the current Salmagundi Art Club on Forty-Seven Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10003, 212-255-7740

Please get back to us with what you find out. I would love to know the artist's name.

I would also check into having the blue matt replaced with acid free matt.

Good luck

There is the poet H.D., who was alive at that time, but I don't know if she painted as well. Her real name was Hilda Doolittle. Can you see why she went by H.D.? ; )
