I was at Borders reading a restoration book, unfortunately I dont remember the name of it off hand, and one of the topics of course was windows. It was an interesting read which pretty much said restore your windows. They did testing with the older unrestored windows compared to the newer windows and found that it would take approximately 125-130 years to get a return on investment in heating and cooling bills if you buy new windows. It has to do with the fact that the conductivity of glass.
The framing on the old windows is much better because it is old growth wood and not young harvested wood which is less dense. Unless your windows are well beyond repair I would say restore them, I think you will enjoy them more. And if you do decide to replace them please do not throw them away as I am sure there are plenty of people out there that would love to have them. Bill |

Sam,
Any chance that a storm window could be added over the current windows? |

I have found a company that builds low-E, Argon gas filled, double pane, storm windows.
I'm considering them for replacement storms for our 1914 A & C Bungalow. Here's the URL http://www.greenwoodworkshop.com/whoweare.html |

I just wonder how heavy those double pane storm windows are and if that would be make it hard to add them to the second story. It would be great for a one-story house. (It's not that far to the ground when the ladder tips over or the window slips out of your hands. . .)
The problem with storm windows is that they come off during the summer and get stored somewhere else. Otherwise, you don't get those cool evening breezes that help cool a house down. But, those storms would be authentic and look good. Has anyone tried these storm windows from this company? Bev. Bev. |
