Hello all!

I wanted to pose a question regarding my home's chimney. We have no fireplace -- the chimney was from an old furnace that was replaced long before we bought the house. Sadly, the chimney isn't located in any advantageous spot where a fireplace could be constructed, and really provides no structural support to the house itself.

My question is: Can we remove the chimney without affecting the integrity of the design, or should we simply "keep it & cap it" to maintain the home's originality?

Hello Carlbc,

I for one would not hesitate to take down the kitchen chimney, if it were no longer serving a purpose.

My water heater is now venting out of our chimney. As soon as I can take care of that - and put on a new roof, I'm taking it down. It's leaning precariously and would need some serious repointing to make it safe.

Perhaps you could save the bricks and make a nice walkway somewhere around the house with them.
