Have you heard of Rhino-shield for your house? I am needing to get the exterior of my house painted and I am wondering if a permanent coating is appropriate? Here are two web sites that I have looked at:
www.ihatepainting.com
www.theultimatepaintjob.com

Thanks

Well, there are a couple of things to consider...

#1 Most of the paint problems occur from the inside out

Old homes did not have a vapor bariier applied, Most were just 1x6 applied as an exterior sheathing.. So they are prone to building up moisture on the inside of the walls. No matter how good you scrape, prime etc.. it will always bubble. Even the good paint rated at 30 years, will not last more than 7-8 years. Plain and simple, there is no quick fix for paint..

You just can;t beat the new siding they have today, but it does look modern (although it is getting better)

If it were me, before I went with the 'permanant' paint .. I would check into the cost of having a stucco exterior put in. With all of the new commercial buildings using stucco now, it should be pretty easy to find a contractor to put this in place. The new application, the stucco is applied over foam sheets.. It will increase the R value of your home, and the lifespan will pretty much be forever.

You will need to paint the stucco, but because you don;t have the issues with moisture, you will never really have peeling paint.

If you really want to get fance, you could put in a lower layer of field stone (about 36" in height) and the upper in stucco.. (very cool)

Just a few ideas...

Rob

Hi,
I know I am a little late on this post but I hope you are not suggesting that individual with an historic home replace wood siding with stucco or any other synthetic siding would be totally inappropriate. I hope Debbie did not take your advice. As a preservationist and owning and living in an historic Craftsman home located in a National Register Historic District I cringe at advice like this. We would hope that anyone who owns an historic arts and crafts style home would preserve all character defining features of that structure, which includes the siding. And by the way most of the permanent coatings I have seen are inappropriate as well. As most of us who own old homes know they are almost always more expensive to properly maintain .
