I have metal hinges on my 2/1 outward opening casement windows. I've stripped the old paint layers down to bare metal. They are rusting now. What do I paint them with? And what color?

you could try steel brushing to get the surface rust off, buffing with steelwool and doing a varnish. it would have to be done periodically, but would prevent rusting if you want to keep bare metal.

tung oil also works well, you can wipe on a new coat anytime.

i didn't say you couldn't use poly. imo tung oil works just as well, is a bit thinner, easier to apply and less affected by expansion and contraction.
