Hi. I am brand new to this forum. We are purchasing a 1915 house, which needs extensive renovation. I would like to know the style to help springboard us in staying true to the original concept.

The beautiful thing about this house, is while it need so much work, the woodwork and floors inside have never been varnished or sanded!

Thanks a bunch!
Lisa

Lisa--

Your house has so many Craftsman-style details that it's tempting to just call it a bungalow style. But it has a more "modern" character than a typical bungalow ... it would likely have been described as an "modern artistic" style home in the catalog or plan book.

It lacks the large porch that is one of the defining characteristics of the typical bungalow, but that may be the result of enclosing the porch. If you were to trim the shrubs back and open up the porch, additional detail would be revealed. Are the porch pillars battered or are they columns? Round or square?

The exposed rafters and knee braces are right for a bungalow and so is the shed dormer and roof pitch.

Does the front door open directly into the living room and are the rooms open without small enclosed spaces? In a way, it reminds me of the Foursquare, except for the roof. How are the rooms laid out?

HI Rikki,

Thanks for your thoughts! My husband is going back to the house this week and can take pictures. It is not "ours" until mid MaySmile

For imaginary sake, I will describe the living room first going from right to left. When you walk in the front door, to the right on the side is a staircase. It goes up to the second floor, as well as goes a half or a third of a flight into the tiny kitchen. Just to the left of the staircase is a closet, with a beautiful mirror that looked original hanging on the outside. sliding down the same wall, one would face when entering is an open area to the dining room. Just past this opening and turning "left face" is a fireplace..

Going back to the dining room. there is a beautiful hutch/built in. (See posted picture) . I cannot remember any more details about this room. Past the dining room is the little kitchen, which used to have some type of stove that was vented all the way out to the roof. Off of the kitchen is the first floor sunporch.

Below all of this is a basement... A toliet is down here, that I assume is a later addition.

Onto the second floor. Upstairs are three bedrooms, mostly the same size. Off of one is another sunporch. There is also the only full bathroom. This unfortunately looks like is was tinkered with in the 60s. It has a shower head, and just does not fit in with the rest of the house. I could be wrong, but I have never been in an old house that had a shower/tub combo that was that old. We were discussing what to put in there...clawfoot.

Thanks so much for your view!! Have a great day.

Hi. Thanks for checking on me! We did not buy the house...I'll spare you the sad story but could not come together in regards to appraisal and repair costs. The house search will resume in the spring. Smile
