I have some really nice (and old) tin work on all my walls and ceiling from an old schoolhouse. I would like to change the paint color in some areas, and would like advice on how to do so.

What kind of paint should I use? and do I need to prep the tin beforehand? I'm a little worried that if I don't remove the exisitng paint, the detail of the tin will be lost.

The tin is also on the ceiling, so is there any advice for that?

I've attached a picture to show the tin in its current state.

thanks in advance

Am i missing something? The tin does not appear to be painted and if that is the case I would leave it alone.

hey wabash,

the tin is painted actually, it's gold, and has quite a nice glitter effect on it.

I'm more interested in the ceilings, which are painted white

From my experience the best and only way on an irregular surface is with some sort of stripper but then doing that on a ceiling would not be fun. Is taking it down too much work? You are right about losing the detail by overpainting which would be a shame. Perhaps spraying would put a thinner coat on. I gotta go to work, good luck for now, Keep us posted.

Extreme solution, take all of the tin down and take it to a "dip and strip".
