Based in England we have picked up a chair which on first impressions may look French. However it also has distinctive features used by both Maple & Co and Howard and sons. The Balls at the ends of the arms I've seen previously on a stamped Maple & co chair, and the French ornament was used extensively by Howard and sons in the late 1800's. From there the chair does also have an Arts & Crafts flavour ( or maybe even Liberty ). There is no makers mark, it is constructed of oak. I suppose my questions would be: Is the chair English or French ? What movement or style would it fit into ? Any input or direction to relevant reference material would be most welcome. |
