Living relatively close to where a lot of Arts and Crafts furniture was made, I am somewhat fortunate that I am able to find an occasional piece, reasonably priced. I suspect that the farther West one travels, the higher the cost for Arts and Crafts furniture. It is probably more difficult to find a quality piece, at a bargain price(i.e., finding perhaps a signed Limbert,or Stickley piece, at a low cost),due to the fact that more hands have had the time to examine furniture more closely, and often, before it has reached your area. I would be interested in hearing from anyone living in the Western United States, with regards to both quality and prices of Arts and Crafts furniture, found in your area. I would also be interested in any "finds" someone has found. Photos would be great. Thanks, Tim

Hello Tim,
Sorry about being so long looking and reading your post and after seeing that you are from Wapa. I just had to reply because I am in London, OH where I make the various pieces of A&C furniture with my last being a Greene and Greene sideboard table with exposed dovetails. Which went to Los Angeles, CA. Should you be interested in dropping into my shop here in London just email me at Ralj7@AOL.com and I would be more than happy to take you down the road through my portfolio as well as a tour of my home town. Of which I produced many reproductions of ornamental trim that could not be found anywhere other than my shop. Respectfully, Ralph Jones www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |

Tim,
I am here in Tucson, AZ and we do get the occassional A&C piece of furniture. My wife and I do not collect the furniture normally unless we can acquire it inexpensively and only if there is room in the house. Tucson is home to Eric Firestone Gallery and Eric specializes in Arts & Crafts Movement and Modernist furniture, paintings and decor. We also have a few collectors in town who decorate their homes in the style and one or two antique dealers who sell what they find. Prices can be high, particularly if they are signed or can be attributed to as specific maker. My wife and I have found and purchase a pair of Morris style chairs (probably English) a desk and a foot stool. I am in the process of restoring a L&JG Stickley rocker that will take much work just to make it usable. I believe we paid $350 for the chairs, $250 for the desk, & $15 for the foot stool. I have heard of some incredible bargains that were acquired here. Fred (Moderator) http://fredz49.blogspot.com/ |

If someone had the interest and the time, it would be an interesting experiment to search Craigslist for pricing across the country and check your theory.
We're in Oregon and occasionally you can get very good deals, but for the most part pieces, especially signed, are on the high end. I have a couple old mission pieces (not exciting or signed, but then I don't really care about the signatures ... I'm perfectly okay with unsigned student work and period knockoffs) that I've had for years that I paid almost nothing for. Lauren, though, has been carefully amassing a collection of signed pieces. She's purchased some pieces locally when she can find them (at a decent price) but has also had some shipped. Rikki |

As I've said before on previous threads, I've found great deals on signed pieces on Craigslist( Stickley, Roycroft ). It does seem that there's less out here in the West, and the places that carry high-end antiques do charge a premium. But, if you look around hard enough, there are always deals to be found. My sense is that the revival of the Arts & Crafts/ Mission style as a popular design trend has pretty much ended, so I've noticed a lot of generic antique A & C stuff in the stores going for very cheap prices. You'll always have to pay more money for the desireable stuff.

Good Morning Friends,
I have to agree with Circa Vintage Design as here in Ohio it is truly a rare find for a signed piece of A&C furniture as it will not bring as much as in the high end locations. I am sure that most of you know that I construct furniture in the Arts and Crafts Style and my pieces though are not an exact duplicate but a reasonable facsimile and I also brand and sign each piece as well as to date them. My prices are more in line with todays market for this style of furniture, however they are not cheap as I stand behind all of my products and correct any default that may occur. Hello Tim,
You have already found that on these forums there are people who care about our passion in the A&C style and along with you we now have another one who is enchanted by it. I look forward to the day that you are able to visit my shop where we can cover many aspects of the movement as well as some of the patterns I have for the making of the genuine pieces, not counting the ones I design myself. Thanks for your input on these forums and we look forward to any information you might run across that pertains the Arts and Crafts Movement. Respectfully, Ralph Jones www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |

Tim,
Well, having recently hit a Arts adn Crafts furniture store in Santa Monica...just a couple hundred yards from the ocean, I think thats about as far west as you might get. Of course this is Los Angeles so EVERYTHING cost more than somewhere else. But I would definatly say that we are at the higher end of things. I was very interested in a Charles Stickley rocker...unsigned, re-finished, which was going for $1,600. I liked it as the fit was just perfect, and I am in the market for a rocker. I have seen items on Ebay/Craig's List across the country and such, for half the price, but what kills it is the shipping and the idea of not seeing something you are buying first. Voorhees Craftsman has some wonderful pieces, and makes their own great stuff.... but at a premium. Around $4,000 for a Morris Rocker. Lots of Celebs into the A&C movement, and Pasadena is quite a hotbed of Craftsman homes being restored. Hope that helps. Cheers, Dave |

just to clarify... I was interested in the chair, but not at the $1,600 price. A bit crazy, but that was one of their low end chairs.
