Clare,

It would be helpful to have an image of the entire piece. The label is not Stickley Brothers since they were from Grand Rapids Michigan and your lable is from a company in South Bend, Indiana. I have been unable to find a manufacture in that town that may have made your piece of furniture.

Clare,

It is difficult to tell what exactly I am looking at, and what I do see looks like quality construction. Is there a possibility to see the fully assembled table?

The only furniture manufacturer that I can find in South Bend, Indiana from the time period is the Shidler Brothers Manufacturing Company.

Shidler Brothers Manufacturing Company

Exerpt: (at the bottom of the page.)
"This was an old established business, a furniture factory, specializing in tables. During 1896-97 the business was conducted as Wells-Shidler Manufacturing Company. In 1897 Dr. Clem Shidler, South Bend dentist, joined the other two brothers and the Shidler Brothers Manufacturing Company was incorporated. The articles of incorporation were dissolved in 1920 and the three brothers continued in the business as a partnership under the same name until 1928, when Adam Shidler became sole owner. For many years this firm has operated a factory making fine dining and office tables, and the output is sold from coast to coast. In addition to the factory Mr. Shidler conducts a retail factory furniture store, which enjoys a large trade throughout the South Bend district."

thank you so much this is a great site full of great information
it is so exciting to finally find where the table came from. i have been looking on various web sites and really like american antiques.
are there any books etc that will tell me the value of the table
most people here have not seen anything like it before and have trouble telling what the wood is. i believe it is american oak with a tiger pattern
anyway thanks all

regards

Clare,

I think you are right about the table being oak. The "tiger pattern" is the result of the wood being quartersawn. It really glows on some of the antique pieces and I just love it.

Our book store has a big selection of items on the topic of furniture. Furniture Section - ACS Bookstore
You should probably check out the ones that are general such as: Arts and Crafts Furniture: From Classic to Contemporary
