Hi,
I am looking to find J M Young bookcases and a six slat shoe-footed J M Young Morris chair to complete my collection or rare pieces. If anyone finds one please keep me informed. One went at Rago's several years ago and I keep kicking myself for not biting the bullet and buying the Morris chair then. I have only seen one other than the one that appeared at Rago's. One other piece I would like to find is the bedroom chest of drawers that Young made. I have only seen one of those. Any help would be appreciated. My best, Michael |

Good Morning Dr. Clark,
First I would like to welcome you to these Arts and Crafts Society forums and we hope you continue coming back as there are so many things to talk about as well as to learn from the different forums of the changes brought forward from the A&C Movement. Now to try to answer your question with a question. Have you tried Ebay or Amazon or for that matter, have you done a Google search? I have found many items of interest by searching those three avenues of searching. Best of luck in your quest to find these items and I am sure that since you have brought up the subject that others on here will try to help you find what you desire. Respectfully, Ralph Jones www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |

Hi Ralph,
I am constantly going through all of the regular channels looking for this chair as well as a number of "one" or "few" of a kind pieces. Since I have the JM Young financial and design books I know most of these pieces and just keep looking. However, of course, I can not be online all the time and often rely on my friends to help me out on ferreting out these rare pieces. This chair like the bookcases are very rare. They come up ever so often. Many times at the smaller auctions and then disappear. I spend at least a few hours each day on e-bay and even craig's list looking under all the terms that might pop something up. I hope before I leave this earth I get to watch an Ole Miss or Michigan game in one. I have a lot of the footstools both the Stickley knockoffs and the one like you saw. I picked up one of those for a couple of dollars at an auction from a lady who bought it to stand on to see the auctioneer. It was in Camden and it had come out of the factory unfinished. I got a chance to finish it myself from some of the techniques Gordon Young had passed on to me. Again, thanks for your help and comments. My best, Michael PS For those who have not seen my collection it is still on line at various places from the article that appeared in American Bungalow that David Cathers did last summer. |

Ralph,
I forgot to mention I had one of the tables and let it go some years back. They have quadralinear (sp?) legs as well as the splines you noticed. A lot of these came out of a restaurant in Syracuse and I got one of them and kept it for awhile. I just ran out of space. They are great kitchen tables. Michael |

Michael,
One of the difficulties of collecting is finding room for all the items one collects. My wife is about to kick me out of the house. Every square inch of shelf space is filled with metalwork. Each a treasure and an inspiration..... and who has the time to dust it all. I wish you luck on finding the Young bookcases and chair and will keep my eyes peeled for you. If anyone deserves that chair it is you. Best, Fred Fred (Moderator) http://fredz49.blogspot.com/ |

Hey Michael,
I just flipped through your Young book, but didn't see the chair or chest of drawers. I assume the are uncataloged? How much other Young do you think is out there that we haven't seen? |

Hi,
This is for the question on pieces of J M Young that are not "cataloged". There are a lot of pieces that do not appear in the retail plates and we only have reference to them in the list in the back of the book. I do have a photo of the chest of drawers and it appears in the front of the book in the text. It is a dead ringer for the early Gustav Stickley piece. We know of a number of pieces like that one, but we do not have photos. My best Michael |
