I've come across a Limbert settle. It has the brand on the underside of the right armrest and #549 on the back rail under the slats. How can I find out the date of this peice?

Hello Shivas,
The Charles F. Limbert Company was in Grand Rapids, MI. around 1900 and after 1905. I know because I made a Tabourette reproduction of his that was made in 1905. I will attach a picture of it for your enjoyment. I will do some research to see if I can find anything else on him. Respectfully, Ralph Jones www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |

Thanks Ralph,
The brand on my piece says "Grand Rapids and Holland" so I know it is post 1906, but I read that the Company continued on after Limbert's death in 1923, maybe even through WWII. I was just hoping to narrow down the date range a bit better that 1906-1945. Shivas P.S. Nice web-site! |

Good Morning Shivas,
I really know very little about Limbert and I wondered if you had or have any information of his life that would be interesting, and that I could add to my Arts and Crafts History. If you do in fact have some history on him I would appreciate an email so I can give you my home address to send it to me, of which I will gladly pay you for your trouble. Ralj7@AOL.com The number of the piece you have was the number of that particular piece in the line of that style. The next piece after it would have one more number above the one on your piece. Respectfully, Ralph Jones www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |

Good Morning Shivas,
I have purchased a book on Charles F. Limbert, and as soon as I get it I may be able to give a little more insight on him. Respectfully, Ralph Jones www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |

Hey Ralph,
Most of what I know about Limbert is what I have read here on the Arts and Crafts Society webpage (click on "Archives" then "People"). I have also looked at the reprinted 1903 catalog. All of the peices had a model number, which leads me to believe that the number on my peice is a model number rather than a serial number. Alas, #549 was not in the catalog, but one settle that closely resembles mine was listed as #849. So who knows. Thanks for your interest in this. Shivas |
