I'm new to the forum and thought I'd jump right on in. We have a branded Stickley Brothers Grand Rapids sideboard that we need to sell and wondered if anyone had information on it we could pass along to prospective buyers.

This sideboard or buffet features the "barley twist" style that was adopted by the Stickley Bros later in their production. I forget exactly what year that was. While Gustav Stickley used the "barley twist" in much of his experimental pieces (around 1900) he didn't use it again when his Craftsman period began and took root. Generally the Stickley Bros barley twist designs are less desirable than the early and middle periods where the lines were straight and clean.

In the ad, I'd mention if whether the finish is original or not, I'd also mention the hardware - original or replaced. I would open the drawers and photograph the dovetails, and get a picture of the mark or label. All these things would affect the value of the sideboard.

Barley twists aside, the piece looks like it has great quartersawn grain and should not be hard to sell.

Being rather busy building new Arts and Crafts furniture, this is the first chance I have had to look at your piece and I agree with the others that the Barley legs are nice looking they did not sell as well as the straight legs did due to the fact that some folks thought they were taking away from the Stickley style of furniture. Welcome to these forums and if you hang around long enough you will find your self being drawn back day after day. Happy to see you aboard.
