Please see the attached link for a pair of unusual chairs. I am looking for any insight - the V&A thought they were Spanish Colonial (I do not think so) but someone else has suggested Arts and Crafts - maybe Scottish/Nordic hence the question here. All comments appreciated.

Seems to be a mix of styles/techniques whatever they are - as a result one might even think oriental of some sort. Can you identify the wood - could be a good clue.

The wood is OAK - which is why I ruled out Latin America. Likewise, I think the Orient is also unlikley. Thanks.

Well the most traditional use of oak is either in America and Canada, or the UK. They don't appear to be off any assembly line, that's for sure, but if they are they wouldn't have been a high volume item. They certainly aren't American A&C, but maybe early English (or Scottish, or Welsh interpretation of A&C). Looking at them again something makes me think monasterial or religious purpose - just another gut thought.
