in the wake of the strickly wood disaster, several folk have asked about other good REPUTABLE makers.
DISCLAIMER - i am not associated with nor have i purchased any products from any of these companies. that said, the following list is of companies i have heard about either through conversation, reputation in polite circles or i just like the stuff they present. all seem to be similar in price, meaning none are cheap. voorhees craftsmen is a well respected dealer that handles period pieces as well as reproduction furniture. i have talked to people that have seen their pieces up close. they display at the grove park show every year. they have a wide range of work and do custom as well. mission guild is another maker that has been around for some time and has good word of mouth reputation. they range a bit broader into english influences so they have good variety. mitchell andrus is also well know and sell through several dealers as well as online. his furniture is somewhat limited to choice, but overall his quality looks good. black river mission was recommended by a friend. their pictures on line look very good. worth looking at i think. house of yesteryear also looks inviting. i think someone from their shop contributes to these forums on occasion. heart of oak also has a good site and seems to be respected. check out the spotlights on makers in american bungalow and style 1900 magazines. i think most of the above have been featured in one or the other at some time. i think i would prefer the smaller makers rather than the big warehouse types. it follows the character of the movement better. barn funiture would all into that category i think. they look good on paper (or monitor) but not sure where they get their stuff. and it is pretty high priced. others like harvest house and casual living furniture also show nice stuff, but i dont know anything about their quality or service. again, i am not endorsing any of the above, just offering names to look at. everyone should do the homework, ask for references, check BBB's, and authorities in their local areas. |

Hello Don,
That in my opinion is a nice listing of makers of A&C furniture. I myself am a A&C Furniture maker on a small scale and by individual orders as I do custom woodworking. The biggest thing is shipping because at todays prices of shipping it is almost cost prohibitive to ship too far. I had a client who wanted me to make a receptionist desk/counter in San Diego CA but the shipping was going to cost $1845 and change. I am going to attach a few of my drawings and pictures of some work I have done. Respectfully, Ralph Jones www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |

Hey Don,
I like your shelf and the corbels are equally in the right proportion. I like the lamp with the glass shade what mark if any is on it? It looks like a form of Tiffany. Respectfully, Ralph Jones www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |

Good Morning Don,
I am attaching a quilt rack that I can't keep in my store front very long as they go as fast as I can make them.I make them out od poplar and stain them in the fumed oak stain and cherry, then finish them with seven coats of Tung Oil and they sell for $150. that sounds like a very low price...i think you could get much more than that from the quality that shows in the picture...

Hello Don, This is a little farm town of less than 10,000 and I feel lucky to get $150 for them.
the way I figure it is that a half of loaf of bread is better than no bread at all. When I make them and send them by UPS I get $250 out of them and that includes shipping. Respectfully, Ralph Jones www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |

Hello,
Wonder if the desk could be made to 'knock down' like some of the old cabinets would do.. it would make shipping much easier.. I checked those measurements and est weight (450 pounds) by Forward Air www.forwardair.com and it priced at $380 to ship cross country. Thanks, Rob Bennett |

Hello Rob,
Yes it can be made with KD connectors so it could be shipped by UPS as well as the shipping agent you suggested. I have shipped two so far and they both went to NJ. The buyer sent me two pick up orders and paid for them on his end. I can ship them in two containers. If you are interested in my desks contact me by email at Ralj7@AOL.com www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com |
