Hi.....I just discovered this board, what a great resource!....and I was hoping someone could help me.
I just acquired an early 5 slat JM Young morris chair out of an attic. It has a great totally untouched original ebony finish, original springs and frame and velour cushions that are more than usable. All I've done so far is clean the dirt off and lightly wax it. But the adjusting pegs are missing and was hoping someone might be able to help or point me in the right direction on finding a picture/dimensions etc. of them. I know a local restorer who's really good and thoughful in his work but we need something to go on. I've looked through all my books, googled it and asked a few other collectors but no luck. Anyone have any thoughts? |

cutelilbungalow,
JM Young #186 Morris Chair, If you look closely at the pictures on this page, you can see that there are not pegs but a bar, that is moved to adjust the back of the chair. Lauren |

Hi....appreciate the reply but that is a 4 slat version which had a back bar...mine is the earlier version which had adjusting pegs in the arms similar to Gus chairs.

Hello cutelittlebungalo,
You will find that there are many morris chairs circulating around the world with some having the adjusting pegs and some with out them leaving no manner of moving the back of the chair. This does not devalue them in the least as they were accepted through out in the fashion they were made. Thank you for your interest in the Arts and Crafts furniture as I do believe they are coming back in style for some of the older folks who wish to fill their homes with the good sturdy furniture, whether bought in an antique store or from a craftsman who is building them. Respectfully, Ralph Jones http://hometown.aol.com/ralj7/index.htm |

I believe this model had square headed pegs that inserted into holes on the inside of the arms. I have no information on the exact dimensions.
A suggestion might be to contact a few of the top auction houses such as Rago or Treadway and ask if they could photograph the peg with dimensions. They receive a large volume of items yearly. We would love to see an image of the chair you have. We thrive on images and sharing information. Fred (Moderator) http://fredz49.blogspot.com/ |
