Look at this chair..
http://cgi.ebay.com/HUGE-signed-Charles-Stickley-5-Slat...QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem The back is obviously (to me anyways) a cut down ladder back, the overall design is absolutely nothing like anything I've seen from C. Stickley - looks more like Phoenix Chair Co. or Cortland with the style of arm that butts to the post (simpler variation of Harden style), and the pics of the shop mark are conveniently blurry while the other pics are relatively sharp...throw out the bait and reel in the suckers; opposite opinions or evidence to prove its a C. Stickley please!? |

Well, after reading from the Stickley Bros. book, by Clark/Thomas, seems Charles was the "odd duck" of the family. Certainly not the conformist, his designs were much bolder and manufacture process was somewhat less than his brothers. He used Gustav's components, designs and ideas, as well as not going the full mile when manufacturing his lines. He was frugal, I guess. Used lesser grade components and cheated assembly and designs like shelve thickness etc, yet he made some pretty cool stuff for the time.
I saw a picture of a Gustav morris chair with very simialr lines, construction and overall look. Charles had a line of a chair, rocker, settee that had similar lines. He built some chairs with 2 x 4 construction. Beefy look! Anyway, I asked that owner to send along a better pic of the signiture and was refused. Owner states it was authenticated and purchased from Firestone Gallery. Paid $4500! in 2002. It is in the Tuscan Guide Quarterly, 2002, 4th page in he states. IMO, I think it could be real, a lesson in design and style, a bit off the path of his peers but still of the tradtion of the day. It has that "low rider" look! BTW, It has just been "pulled" off eBay by the owner as of now. Hmmmmmm.. |

LOL, I was surfing like an hour ago and saw it relisted and like you say...PULLED. Something smelly IMO. Notice his Buy It Now at 2400 - yah sure take a 2100 dollar hit from his supposed 4500 purchase
...reading his listing in more detail http://cgi.ebay.com/Massive-Charles-Stickley-5-slats-mo...QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem ...he says he had a 2000 reserve to protect his investment, LOL, to protect 4500?! I think he ran it once and set a stupid high reserve just to see how the bidding went, then quickly relisted with a Buy it Now and reserve somewhat above the first bidding to see if someone would bite for an extra grand or so. |

Good to hear some more information that it is likely a legit chair. I can see why it wouldn't be comfortable - just one more step in the ladder back and a back cushion would have made a ton of difference. I still wonder why he pulled it, seems weird. As far as the brand goes I think it would be quite easy to fake given whats been reported on the forum re fake copper marks, laser copy etching, and fraud alerts on dealer websites - people are doing it, no question. Take a digital image and trace of a legit mark and transfer it to a milling machine that makes custom cut brands, or similar process, and it's done. I won't be surprised someday to see good quality stuff on eBay with sellers saying UNSIGNED as actually a good thing!
